Our Story

The Chrysalis Group, Inc. was founded as a non-profit organization in 1994 by Nancy Millner to provide the Richmond community with opportunities for personal and spiritual growth informed by, but not necessarily bound by, mainstream religion. Her vision was "to provide hospitable time and space for seekers on diverse paths to live connected to their true selves, to each other, and to Spirit."

Chrysalis has sponsored numerous workshops, classes and retreats over the years and has brought nationally known spiritual leaders such
as Parker Palmer, Marcus Borg, James Hollis, Margaret Wheatley, Peter Russell, Tara Brach, and Rick Hanson to Richmond to share their knowledge
and expertise. Silent Ember Days seasonal retreats, spiritual practice groups and an outdoor labyrinth on Richmond's Northside are among other Chrysalis offerings.

Chrysalis has more than 200 supporting members and thousands of people have attended our lectures, workshops and practices. Each year, Chrysalis has offered unique and innovative programs to encourage spiritual growth beyond traditional boundaries.

Chrysalis Evolves!

We now envision an outward shift for Chrysalis.
We will become the Chrysalis Institute in the Fall, 2013.

A vibrant resource and learning center for exploring insights and practices from the world's spiritual traditions, philosophies and contemporary science.
A dynamic forum for the exchange of ideas and shared experiences.
Building an inviting spiritual community to open pathways for diverse spiritual and personal growth.
A catalyst for new levels of consciousness recognizing our sacred connections.

The Chrysalis Institute will establish a Faculty to oversee and create integrative spiritual growth experiences. We will reach a broader audience through expanded multimedia avenues, a vibrant website with online learning opportunities and growing our program, practice and other experiential learning opportunities. We will establish a National Advisory Board and look for a new location to enhance our spiritual community.

Over one third of Americans identify as spiritual but not religious. The Dalai Lama calls for a new global ethics that is beyond religion. We are increasingly connected through advanced technologies, but, faced with bombarding information and choices many feel more alienated and polarized than ever.

Yet, a new worldview is arising that recognizes our sacred connections and calls us to consider age-old questions in new ways by exploring ancient spiritual traditions and insights from modern science.

We have more in common than the beliefs that often divide us.

The Chrysalis Institute will strive to be a think tank and thought leader to encourage spiritual growth beyond traditional boundaries.
